This is the first post in a new category of the blog labeled Q&A. Sometimes, I have a question that I would like to ask pertaining to the blogosphere or a topic dealing with WordPress but I never seem to garner any responses on Twitter or the forum. So, I’ve decided to throw my questions into the form of a blog post and let you guys answer them via comments.

The first question to start us off is:

Does a blog with a DIGG THIS button with 0 Diggs next to every post end up giving you the perception that the content of the blog must suck?

Personally, I use a certain Digg Button plugin which only displays the digg button if the post has been submitted. That way, it only displays when necessary and it actually shows that at least 1 person digged the post.

Well, having that digg button on EVERY blog post does make the blog look like its trying to garner too much social media attention. IMO Typically this approach doesnt really help or look good.

Another way to do this is simply have a small digg button at the bottom of the post. try that.

I take no notice of what has been Dugg or not, so no it doesn’t meant that to me.

If anything it just means that the post doesn’t have an overly sensational headline.

I try to avoid thinking that - that a post that has 0 diggs is not important - because I know that there are a lot of people who read blogs (whether regularly or casually) who don’t use Digg for a number of reasons - don’t understand it, don’t want to take the time to set up a Digg account to use it, or just don’t care to contribute by Digging or commenting. So a post can be widely read, but just not Dugg.

But of course, all that being said, it’s our nature to make snap judgements and I would not want to display a 0 Diggs button on my posts :)

I’d love to know what plugin you’re using……mind sharing it?

@Ptah Dunbar I’ve seen that on a number of blogs as well and that doesn’t seem to be as bad as having a number of bigg 0 digg buttons on the page.

@Andrew True. If it’s not being dugg, it’s probably safe to assume the article is not about Apple or politics.

@Trisha I actually use something called Digg This 1.0.2 Adds Digg story link on detection on digg referrer By Aviran Mordo. I only see a digg button once a post has been submitted to digg. :) Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

Jeff,

I equate anything written by you as sucky content. Okay, just kidding :)

Since I rarely write digg-worthy content, I haven’t thought about this much, but I don’t see an empty Digg button as proof content sucks. Perhaps a Digg button with one or two might mean something, but it’s hard to get the ball rolling on Digg.

I don’t think any one particular thing can say, “This content sucks”. Lack of comments doesn’t do it, and lack of traffic doesn’t do it either. Sucky content is one of those things that is easy to spot, but hard to quantify.

Speaking of which Jeff, what MyBlogLog plugin are you using? I’m hoping to integrate my comment section with both Gravatar and MyBlogLog.

Interesting new category. In defence of the forums, of the thousands of WordPress users out there in blogland there is only maybe a dozen or so of us that help out in the forum on a regular basis. One only need to look at the volume of support requests coming in daily and it’s not hard to figure out why so many queries go unanswered. :)

With respect to Digg, I don’t think I’ve even ever been to the website. (did that sentence make sense?)

@Ronald @ RA Project I think your point of view pretty much sums it up in that, there are more factors involved with judging whether or not the content is high quality, and that a digg button or digg button with 0 diggs is not proof alone that the content is worthless. You also make a good point regarding that even if the post has 0 comments, that still doesn’t mean the content is bad. Considering now a days, a lot of conversation about blog posts is happening away from the blog, that gives even more credence to your point.

The plugin I’m using is called MBLA and you can pick it up here http://code.google.com/p/mbla/

@Len I actually spent about a half hour to forty-five minutes the other day doing support on the forums just because I was in a groove. Each time I refreshed the forum index page, 1-3 new posts were published. Perhaps if I can not get Michael to come on the show with whooami than maybe you would like to come on the show.

Len on March 26th, 2008 at 10:19 am

I’d love to do the show! I still think one of the moderators, if not Michael then perhaps Jeremy (clarktech.no-ip.com) or Otto (ottodestruct.com/blog) would be a much better choice but if they cannot or are too shy I’ll do it. I don’t have a mike though, which is why I stuck to texting in the chat room. Would that be a problem? Could I do it via telephone? I’m new to TalkShoe and haven’t figured everything out yet.

With respect to my comment about people helping in the forums, I better clarify what I meant before the unruly mob jumps all over me. I’m not slagging those who don’t help. I understand everybody is busy with their own lives. I only meant to point out that the number of active helpers vs the number of support requests isn’t even close to being even. It’s all we can do to keep our heads above water. :)
