New Design For Theme Respository?
Steven Hodson of WinExtra.com has posted an interesting screenshot of what the official WordPress Themes Repository website looks like to him. I asked Steve if he was sure that this is what was being displayed on http://themes.wordpress.net/ and indeed it was. When I visited the domain, I couldn’t get anything to change and was instead, stuck with the current or “Old” design. Steve could apparently browse through the theme directory as if the site was live so I don’t think this was a fluke accident.

This could be the new design of the WordPress Themes Repository website. Then again, this could also be a glitch or something else unexplainable.
As for the possible new design, I like how the sorting options that currently display on the left hand side of the site have all been condensed into a simple menu near the top of the site. I also enjoy seeing page navigation on the top and bottom of the theme viewer. I have no idea what the detailed theme pages look like as I can’t access the new design, but based on what I see, I think this new layout could grow on me.
Keep an eye on this post as Steve may or may not add more screenshots. I’d like to see a screenshot of what it looks like when you click on one of the theme images.
*UPDATE* Steve has quenched my thirst and has published a new post which contains 3-4 new screenshots of the *possible* new design.
If anyone out there has any more information in regards to this, please let me know.

@Steven Hodson Awesome. Thanks alot.

This is just the first version of the themeviewer,
note the theme details.
Btw:comment section is too narrow in opera, you might fix that.

Hi Jeff, those screen shots are fake. I’m 100% certain. I just checked and there isn’t any code, nor has there been, to produce that type of experience.

Honestly, i’ve seen that design before and that was a long time ago, i don’t think that would be the theme viewers new design, it looks pretty web 1.0-ish
What’s interesting is all the screenshot does not have the URL in it a.aka browser, i think this theme viewer is from another site.

@Lloyd Budd Thanks for stopping by Lloyd and letting me know. Steve is not one to post fake material and I even asked him if that is what he was seeing when he visited the official theme repository link and he said yes. It’s a weird situation I guess but your answer confirms that this is indeed not the new design.
@Moses Francis I didn’t see that until now. I think it could be entirely possible that this is indeed another theme viewer on a different site.

The overall visual style for the “new design” does not exactly match the WordPress brand and it looks like it’s fake indeed.
But it’s really interesting how this shows up on the official theme repository, then

I posted this on Steve’s site, but I’ll post it here as well:
How come the screenshots do not show the browser, but only the webpage? Traditionally speaking, screenshots of this manner should show the whole picture, including the address bar, status bar, the program they’re running in, etc….
I’m not saying this isn’t real, but just that it’d be nice if we had a more, shall we say, complete picture of the theme viewer.

@Computer Guru Computer Guru, you make a good point but thats a question that I can not answer as I didn’t do the screenshots. Perhaps Steve will be able to answer them on his own blog.

As I just commented over WTC Steve isn’t faking anything. I have also seen that theme viewer a couple of times after clicking a link from the main WordPress site. The first time was a couple of weeks ago and just assumed it was a prototype they were testing.
There was also an email addy given for anyone wanting to help by tagging the themes. I think it was shadow 12 gmail or something.

That font and graphic on the left hand side do look like the style Shadow used to use a lot on his site way back when the Theme Viewer was there… Shadow gave up the project a long time ago and then it moved to the official WP site.

Just wante to publicly apologize to Steve for what I wrote. I was in a bit of a mood for unrelated reasons, and got carried away.
Others have pointed out that is an a very old version of the theme viewer, from before Automattic actively managed it, that is why it isn’t in our code repository. Anyway, that is no excuse for what I wrote. You have my sincerest apology (though I wonder why there would be any other type.)

@Lloyd Budd Hey Lloyd, everyone has a bad day. I’m glad you apologized and everything is back to normal.

@Jeffro I had a discussion with Thomas Silkjaer (Undersigned) and he confirmed it was an older design.
However, it is quite weird that that it was displayed…
