That is the question everyone has been asking considering the TENTATIVE release date was March 10th, which has come and gone. Like every other WordPress fanboy, I’ve been checking and rechecking the WordPress Dev blog for any information related to 2.5 but to no avail. So what happened?
Quite a number of blogs are reporting that WordPress 2.5 simply isn’t ready for the production environment even though WordPress 2.4 was skipped because of the holidays. According to the WordPress Trac which is is the official ticket system for WordPress,
- 2.5 is only 57% complete
- There are 542 closed tickets
- There are still 416 open tickets
Now, as has already been addressed by a number of other people, the number of tickets assigned to a version of WordPress does not matter in regards to it’s release. Photomatt said so himself when presented with that question on the WP-Hackers Mailing List.
Taking a look back into the past, each version of WordPress had gone through a series of beta releases, then Release Candidates before the official stable version was released to the public. I highly doubt WordPress would steer away from this mentality of releases.
With that being said, the Trac has WordPress 2.5 pushed back to March 17, 2008. This means nothing. In fact, the Roadmap for WordPress also means nothing as every date is TENTATIVE and subject to change without notice. Until we begin to see announcements regarding betas or release candidates for WP 2.5, there is no reason to get excited.
