Crap! Why did I think the show was Saturday? I just went to Talkshoe and got the download link to the podcast. Crap.
While there has been a lot of chaff lately, there’s still tons of people releasing awesome, awesome free themes—that aren’t copying/ripping-off premium theme designers. Tons. Probably more if the WP.com marketplace gets off the ground. It has a real chance of inverting everything: premium theme designers selling access/support through wp.com and releasing the theme for free through wp.org.
… but great interview. Thanks Nathan and Jeff.
@Len Yeah, I didn’t do as great a job highlighting that this weeks show was on Friday and not Saturday. I’m going to look into making the area on Talkshoe.com which shows the schedule of the next show into a displaying widget.
@Ian Stewart I realize there are some great themes out there, but how many of then are pushing the boundaries as I refer to Justin Tadlocks OPTIONS theme as an example. If you put a post together which highlights all of the themes that bringing some uniqueness to the world of WordPress while at the same time, breaking down boundaries and pushing the limits, I’ll stand corrected.
And thanks for the comments on the show
One day, you’ll be the one who gets interviewed
Jeffro, as always, I enjoyed your show and for the constant nods to the Options theme you give every week. I hope my theme doesn’t give you too many headaches while playing around with it.
I wanted to respond to something Nathan said about those of us releasing free themes and not making money.
First, I do actually make a small profit from donations, even a few $50 donations. It’s definitely not the way to go if you want to feed and clothe yourself though. Advertising on my blog has been helpful too, although as soon as my current advertisers terms are up, I’m removing advertising. Free themes also drive a lot of custom design work, which I get most of my money from.
Next, he’s totally right when he says that eventually people will want to make a little money because we can’t support these free themes forever.
I will say that I have some monetary plans up my sleeve for the future. One project I hope to announce sometime next month. I’ve just got to work out a lot of kinks. I won’t be entering what we call the premium theme market though.
Jeff,
It was a pleasure being a guest on the podcast this past Friday. I hope we can do it again sometime soon (maybe we can put together a panel or something).
Justin,
Glad to see you stopped by and listened to the interview. I look forward to seeing what kind of ideas you have for monetizing free themes. Should be interesting!
Nathan
